Jacob's Story
Jacob Smith, grandson of our CWC member, Anne Smith, was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when he was 18 months old. Life was not easy for Jacob as he was not able to be as active as other kids his age. He was on medication and had to be extremely careful not to get exposed to colds and flu. Over time, Jacob started getting more infections requiring him to spend more time in the hospital.
In October 2024, Jacob was found unresponsive and placed in a medically induced coma. The doctors determined that the only option to survive was for Jacob to receive a double lung and liver transplant. Soon after, Jacob was transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago to receive the best care possible in an impossible situation.
On January 2nd of this year, Jacob was fortunate to receive two life-saving transplants and is still recovering in the hospital. As you might imagine, we are truly grateful to the donor who saved Jacob’s life.
Unfortunately, the financial impact on Jacob’s family has been difficult. As they don’t have a large family or support system. Jacob’s dad who lives in South Carolina is not financially able to cover the related medical bills.
We were fortunate to learn of the Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) who helps reduce the financial barriers by providing fundraising assistance and family support. Any donations made to COTA will strictly be designated in honor of Jacob’s fight and your donation is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
We are thankful for any donations sent to COTA in Jacob’s honor and we are blessed by your love, support, and kindness in giving the gift of life through your donations. If you are interested in making a donation, please click on the COTA link below:
