Covina Woman's Club has operated a recycling center in conjunction with the City of Covina for many years.

All the monies collected for the bundled newspapers, cardboard, aluminum cans, glass and plastics go to our various charities.

Over a period of a few months,
339 plastic 10-gallon containers of used cooking oil have been illegally dumped at the center. Clean up seemed an impossible task. Some members were in favor of closing it down but Arline Payne was determined to find a way to clean it up and keep it open.

Never underestimate THE POWER of a woman!

Thanks to Michele from the City's Environmental Services Section for organizing help from JR Grease Services, and Athens Disposal for arranging for the removal of the oil and containers.

In addition to Arline, CWC members Pat Petten, Katy Phillips and Sue Holland provided the labor to dump the contents of the containers into the barrels provided by JR Grease.

Charles Crow, handyman, and Ryan from JR Grease Services helped the women. Without their help with the heavy lifting, it could not have been done in four hours.

A City crew power washed and vacuumed up the floor the next day so we're open for business again.

The sad thing is that this is so unnecessary. Restauants need only call JR Grease Services and they will pick up for no charge.

Who are the culprits? We ask the community's help in spreading the word. Please don't dump oil here. It contaminates our legitimate recyclables and hurts our charities.
